Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman could be said to have anticipated postmodernism long before anyone invented modernism. One of the unique self-mocking, form-breaking aspects of the book is the special typographical tricks - the most famous of which is the solid black mourning page which marks the death of Yorick. How typical of Sterne that the sad death of a character - of a disease that constantly threatened Sterne himself - is marked with a typographic joke.
