Every gift tells a story...

Alice's Adventures Underground: The Original Manuscript

In July 1862, the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson accompanied three young sisters on an afternoon boat trip. To keep them entertained he told a story, of an inquisitive girl named Alice, and her adventures in an underground world. Two years later he wrote the story down and presented it to the heroine, Alice Liddell, as a Christmas gift.

We all know the revised and edited version which, complete with Tenniel's illustrations, has been a mainstay of children's bookshelves since it was published. But the original tale is less well known. This facsimile edition of Dodgson's manuscript - now one of the British Library's most treasured possessions - brings that original story to a whole new audience, so that modern readers can enjoy the tale as it was first told.
