Typically known for her short stories, Flannery O'Connor's debut novel (1952) was true to her Southern Gothic style. Milton Glaser's brooding 1967 paperback design concentrates on the blindness, which occurs more than once in the book. Glaser was the first graphic designer to receive the National Medal of the Arts award, presented in 2009.
